After initially entering Bierkeller’s Entertainment Complex for a couple of drinks, finding out about the likelihood of live music being played later on in the evening, paired with great value refreshments, ensured our loyalty to stay.
The unexpected performance of acoustic duo, Jake Fletcher and Mark Stelfox was a pleasure to watch. The pair began by taking song requests from members of the audience, from Oasis’ Champagne Supernova to Marvin Gaye’s I Heard It Through The Grapevine. Other songs included Pulp’s Disco 2000 and Stevie Wonder’s Superstition. This instantly demonstrated their versatile knowledge of lyrics and chords, and despite performing covers of songs, the duo’s renditions had original twists making them sound like their own.
Their contrast in voices and great harmonies definitely did the music justice. Not only did Fletcher hit all the notes effortlessly and flawlessly, but the backing vocals of Stelfox complimented him as a main vocalist whilst being distinctive in their own right. An audience member referred to the subtle yet effective music, sounding like something straight out of the sixties on an old vinyl. Credit to them if that was their aim.
Personally, I was surprised the venue wasn’t fuller, but regardless of the size of the crowd they engaged with them for the duration of their set with witty comments; never failing to stay humble and thank them for the applause at the end of each song.
